To celebrate the Centennial of Flight, the National Park Service and the City of Dayton planned a series of initiatives in and around the city. As lead graphic designer on this project with Christopher Chadbourne and Associates, we were retained on a design/build basis with Explus to develop multiple sites to celebrate the legacy of Wilbur and Orville Wright, aviation pioneers, and Paul Laurence Dunbar, writer.
The Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center opened on December 17, 2002. Overlooking the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, it highlights the accomplishments of the Wright brothers and their legacy of invention and innovation, as evidenced by the ongoing achievements in aeronautical research and engineering at Wright-Patterson.
The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center in historic West Dayton opened in July 2003. It showcases the early life and times of the Wright brothers and Paul Laurence Dunbar as they grew up in turn-of-century Dayton, and depicts their experiences as they went on to become the “Geniuses of the Gem City.” A feature film speaks to the legacy of their invention for the world we live in.
